Tommy Sims
Chicago-born, Nashville Songwriter Hall Of Fame nominee, Tommy Sims, has a career spanning nearly 40 years and a discography that reads like the “who’s who” in any genre. Moving to Nashville in the mid-80s, he would soon become involved in many projects as a session musician, arranger and writer, including Amy Grant’s blockbuster albums “Heart In Motion” & “House Of Love”.
An expansion to LA brought work with producers such as Don Gehman (Mellencamp, Tracy Chapman, Hootie & The Blowfish), Don Was (Bonnie Raitt) and Randy Jackson (Mariah Carey, American Idol)
During this era, Bruce Springsteen would hire Sims to accompany him on tour and in the studio during which time he co-produced the Grammy and Academy Award-winning song “Streets Of Philadelphia” as the opener for Jonathan Demme, Tom Hanks & Denzel Washington’s seminal film on the subject of AIDS, “Philadelphia”.
These and other early successes would eventually see Sims’ catalog include the likes of CeCe WInans, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, Garth Brooks, Israel Houghton, Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, BlackStreet, Toni Braxton, T-Pain, Childish Gambino, Take 6, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Wynonna Judd, Trisha Yearwood, Cher, Robert Randolph, Santana, Jonny Lang, Gary Clark, Jr., Eric Gales and inevitably, Sims’ life-long musical “northstar”, Mr. Stevie Wonder…. to name just a few.
Sims would eventually earn 8 Grammy Awards including “Song Of The Year” for Eric Clapton’s “Change The World”, featured in the John Travolta box-office hit film, “Phenomenon”. Sims would also go on to earn several trophies as a top-ranking producer in gospel music for CeCe Winans, Israel Houghton, Smokie Norful, Rachael Lampa, The Katinas, Nicole C. Mullen, Carman & erstwhile family band, Forever Jones (featuring Grammy winner, DOE on her first hit song “He Wants It All”).
Sims would record his only solo project to date, “Peace and Love” thru a co-venture with Universal Records. Within a few years of the album’s release, Sims would retreat entirely from the music business….. entering what would become a 13-year absence from not only the music business but music itself.
This year Tommy returns to the one thing he’s always loved and known best. The music.
